The purpose of this study is to develop self-assertion scale for children. Altough there was Children's Self-assertion Scale of Hamaguchi(1994), it was hard for children to understand it because of too many reverse items for them. In the first study, I listed 33 items related to self-assertion in elementary school children. Self-assertion scale for children was made on the basis of self-assertion scale of Hamaguchi, self-control scale of Nakata and Shiomi(1997)and observation of after-school care of school children's behavior. Thirty-three items were adapted to measure the strength of self-assertion in preliminary investigation. Total of 110 children were tested, among whom 59 were boys and 51 were girls through 4th-6th grade in elementary schools. I performed a factor analysis to analyze what properties may characterize self-assertion of children. Twenty-two of 33 items were adapted as self-assertion scale for children. The purpose of the second study was to construct assertiveness scale for children. Elementary school children rang from grades 4 to 6. A total of 218 children were tested, among who 108 were boys and 110 were girls. A factor analysis was applied to the twenty-two items. Fifteen of 22 items were selected for the scale to measure children's self-assertion. As a result of the factor analysis, four factors were extracted : (1) Indication to other's behavior : to indicate and caution other person in the personal scene ; (2) Expression of opinions : to express different opinion ; (3) Request of help : to request other's helps ; (4) Turning down request : to refuse other's request.
