Although much recent research has explored the personal network of the urban elderly in Japan, few studies have examined its “spatial” spread and its determinants. This paper uses data from an urban elderly survey conducted in Nagoya city to analyze the spatial characteristics of the personal network of the Japanese urban elderly and its determinants. Most of the respondents had at least one child living within 30 minutes distance. About half had at least one sibling, and more than half had at least one friend within this distance. About 90% of the respondents had a child / a sibling / a friend within the same distance. Being female, younger is associated with higher peobability of having a friend within 30 minutes distance. Having lower socio-economic status, living at the same residence for a longer period and living in a particular ward are also associated with higher probability of having a friend nearby. The policy implication of this study is discussed.
