The Acquisition of Japanese Compound Verbs and Implications for Teaching: An Examination of “au” and “komu” at Xi’an Foreign Language University Japanese compound verbs often have various meanings and the rules governing their formation are not constant. Thus it is difficult for learners of Japanese to determine their proper usage. This study investigates how Chinese learners acquire the compound verbs “au” and “komu”, which are often used in Japanese. A grammaticality judgement test and composition test were conducted to determine the most common compound verb errors made by Chinese learners, as well as the mechanism of language acquisition. The Prototype Theory, which is a model of graded categorization in cognitive science, provided the basis for analyzing the study findings. The results indicate that many learners are not able to adequately perform classification of the meaning of compound verbs. In addition, learners tend to believe that the meaning of compound verbs is the combination of the original verb and the prototype meaning of the rear verb. Therefore, learners have difficulty understanding verbs that change their meaning slightly in combination with other verbs. It is clear from these findings, that there are problems with the current teaching of compound verbs, as well as Japanese language dictionaries that are commonly used in China.
