This paper uses relevant literature to examine the images of modern China(Sina), in particular Shanghai, held by Japanese. It also analyzes how these images were initiated and developed in the history of Japanese-Chinese bilateral relationship, which was deeply affected by some significant events such as “Shanghai Incident”, and seeks to clarify what kind of changes had occurred among the “Japanese masses” in the period prior to and shortly after 1930. This study focuses on the contents of an editorial column entitled “Ero Guro Nonsense” featured in the magazine “Crime Public Opinion”, which was considered to be representative of the Japanese popular masses at the time. This paper analyzes the images of China (Sina), and particularly of Shanghai, depicted in these publications.
