書物と髑髏
On the Origin of the Image Association of Books and Skulls

open access
This paper focuses on the image association of books and skulls which we often encounter in the modern European Ex Libris. The author pursues the origin of this motif and finds it lies not, as is usually considered to be the case, in the“ Vanitas” still life works of the 17th century where these images frequently occur. Rather it can traced further back, to the early 16th century, that is, to the secularized humanistic reinterpretation of late medieval religious thoughts about death.
