This study describes a procedure for quantifying responses to open-ended questions. The KJ method is used to convert the responses into categorical data, while multiple correspondence analysis is used to give multidimensional quantification to the categories. Participants, 620 school teachers, answered 10 open-ended statements common in daily conversation. For each question, 7-10 categories of responses were generated by the KJ method, and criteria for the classifications were made. Initially, teachers’ responses were categorized according to these criteria by two raters. Since the inter-rater reliability was satisfactory, the rest of the data was sorted by a single rater. A multiple correspondence analysis resulted in the identification of three dimensions : these were titled (1)curtness, (2)acceptance-denial, and (3)self-centeredness. These three dimensional structures were generally in accord with the hypotheses suggested by the KJ method. Several unsolved problems in using multiple correspondence analysis and the potential application of these methods to other qualitative research are discussed.
