This study aims to paint a picture of women in Muslim society in northwestern China, and also elucidate the way of thinking behind their family lifestyle. The S family, belonging to the Hui people ( a Chinese ethnic group) from Linxia city, Gansu, was chosen for the case study, which describes the family’s structure and daily life.\<br/>The S-family is an extended family with two married couples of three generations living under one roof. Both husbands are out of the house most of the time attending to business, buying daily necessities, visiting people, or, on Friday, attending group worship. In contrast, the wives rarely go out; their lives are centered on the home doing housework and taking care of the children. As to the lifestyle of females, S’s wife and the wife of the eldest son abide by Islamic rules, but the third daughter has a mixed lifestyle incorporating Islamic regulations and mainstream culture. However, the daughter appears to be caught between multiple identities. Although she has a yearning for the Han Chinese lifestyle, she also is aware of her Islamic identity. She is dissatisfied not only with the regulations on Islamic dress and separation of the sexes, but also the restricted role of women in the family. She has studied hard since she was a young child and is currently preparing for the graduate school entrance exam. The desire to leave Linxia city and change her life is the daughter’s main motivation for wanting to further her studies. On the other hand, S’s wife and the wife of the eldest son remain at home, doing housework and taking care of children, and are therefore isolated from the outside world. They follow their husbands’ instructions on everything. S’s wife, as a grandmother, has a high status in relation to her daughter-in-law, but even she cannot change her submissive relationship to her husband. She makes no attempt to change her current life. However, the wife of the eldest son is dissatisfied with her lot and wants to make a change.
