From P. H. Wicksteed to L. Robbins: The Similarities in their Methodology and View of Human Nature

This paper makes a comparative discussion between Lionel Robbins (1898-1984) and Philip Henry Wicksteed (1844-1927), and reveals that they have the common view of human nature in their Economics. Previous researches have shown that Robbins has three characteristics, Classical Economics, Wicksteed, and Austrian School. This paper is focusing on one of the three characteristic between Robbins and Wicksteed. In this comparison, this paper uses three criteria. 1. The view that Economic agent does not be actuated by only egoistic motives. 2. Rejection of interpersonal comparison of utility. 3. Allowance of inconsistent economic behavior. From this discussion, it will be clear that Wicksteed and Robbins have similar view on economic behavior. In these regard, this paper concludes that Robbins and Wicksteed have the common economic methodology which based on a realistic view of human behavior.
