This paper describes the field occurrences and radiocarbon ages of mammalian fossils from limestone caves in the central Kii Peninsula of Southwest Japan. A femur of a Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) was radiocarbon dated at 9,744-10119 cal BP,and a phalanx of a wild boar (Sus scrofa) was dated at 28,140 yr BP; these ages extend before and after the Last Glacial Maximum. Limestone caves, in which many mammalian fossils occur, are very important targets for revealing spatiotemporal transitions of mammalian fauna during the past few tens of thousands years in the Kii Peninsula.
紀伊半島中央部洞川地域の鍾乳洞産哺乳類化石の産状と炭素14年代を検討した.面不動鍾乳洞産ニホンザルの大腿骨化石は9,744-10119cal BPを,五代松鍾乳洞産のイノシシの指骨化石は28,140yr BPを示す.これら年代値は,最終氷期最寒冷期前後の年代に相当する.紀伊半島の鍾乳洞から産する哺乳類動物化石は,最終氷期最寒冷期を含む過去数万年間の哺乳動物相の時空間的変遷を復元する上で重要である.
