In the history of Takeshima debate, a controversy continues about whether awareness of territory and territorial waters can be incorporated into records of kaizu (sea charts) and suiroshi (waterway journals). This paper involves systematic collection of kaizu and suiroshi from around 1905 when Takeshima was annexed as part of Japanese territory. In addition, the paper offers a conclusion to the controversy regarding kaizu by referring to the kaizu regulations that determined how place names should be recorded. Consequently, it argues that territorial awareness can be clearly seen in kaizu and suiroshi, and that, judging from these records, the Japanese Navy prior to 1905 considered present-day Takeshima to lie outside Japanese territory.
