The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of resistive training on strength and morphology, and functional capacity of elderly men and women. Seven elderly volunteers (four men and three women, mean age: 70.5 ± 1.4 years) participated in this study. The subjects were requested to perform the resistive training three times a week for a month, which consists of five resistive exercises, i.e. rising from the chair, hip flexion, calf raising, abduction of the lower limbs and sit up. Five functional and morphological tests were performed before and after the training, i.e. maximal voluntary contraction of isometric knee extension, the time to walk 5 m, the time to rise from the floor, repetitions to sit up for 20 sec and the time for 10 repetitions to rise from chair, the thickness of muscle and subcutaneous fat in the thigh and abdomen by ultrasonography. After the training, the time to walk 5 m, repetitions to sit up for 20 sec and the thickness of subcutaneous fat at the abdomen significantly improved. These results suggest that improvement of functional capacity and morphological adaptation took place in the elderly men and women as a result of short-term resistive training.
