A review on the studies of the solid state chemistry of nuclear materials at high temperatures carried out in our laboratory since 1968 is given. The studies contain several aspects of research; studies on phase equilibria and defect structures, diffusion, chemical reaction and calorimetry. Phase equilibria and defect structures were studied on many material systems; UO[2][±x] and doped UO[2][±x], U[4]O[9][±y], U[3]O[8][-z], ( U,Pu)O[2][+x] and PuO[2] [±x], ( U,Th)O[2][+x], Nd[2]O[3][+x], Pγ-O system, Nb-O system, V-O system, TiO[x] solid solution, C[γ][2]O[3][±x], MoO[2] and MoO[3] , MnFe[2]O[4][±x], Cu[1][-x]Ni[x]C[γ] [2]O[4], Ba[2] YCu[3]O[7][-x], Th[3] N[4] and Th[2]N[2] O, U-Z[γ] and U-Mo alloys, Mo-Ru-Pd(Rh) alloys, Pd-Z[γ] alloy. Diffusion studies were made by using several methods; tracer sectioning method, M[ö]ssbauer line-broadening methods, thermogravimetric and electrochemical relaxation method, etc. The self-diffusion coefficients were measured for iron and cobalt in C[γ]-doped hematite and magnetite, iron in Fe[1][-x]S, iron in iron tellurides. The chemical diffusion coefficients were measured for oxygen in (Th,U)O[2][+x], niobium vacancy in Nb[1][-x]O[2] and oxygen in Ba[2] YCu[3] O[7][-x]. Some oxidation reactions were investigated for UC, iron base alloys and noble metal alloys, and reaction between iron base allay and tellurium was also studied. Crystal growth of UO[2][+x], ( U, Th)O[2] and ThSiO[4] by means of chemical transport reaction and that of Z[γ]C by chemical vapor deposition are also discussed.
