This paper compares the attempts of Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo and the members of ‘Generation of 98’ to search ways of the revival of Spain through academism in late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The paper focuses on the discussion between Pelayo and ‘Generation of 98’, and the role of the essence of Spanish national spirit in their sense of crisis. First, the paper examines the contacts of Pelayo and ‘Generation of 98’ in Spanish academic circles by analyzing the epistles which the former exchanged with the latter and the other Spanish intellectuals. In order to explore the differences between their attitudes toward the spiritual and intellectual development of Spain, the author analyzes Pelayo’s works, La ciencia española and Historia de los heterodoxos españoles, in addition to his critical biographies written by contemporaneous intellectuals. Then, the author analyzes Pelayo’s above-mentioned masterpieces and some works by members of ‘Generation of 98’ to distinguish their points of view regarding the revival of Spain, the transformation of their perception of crisis, and their aims in the search of revival. The author concludes that both Pelayo and ‘Generation of 98’ had the sense of crisis about losing the spiritual core ideas of Spain under the liberal and reformist atmosphere in the end of 19th century, and emphasized the necessity of reconciling the revival and modernization with Spanish national traits. At the same time, their arguments also differ because of the difference of their points of view: Pelayo paid attention to the weakening of the Spanish nature of national academism and education, while the members of ‘Generation of 98’ were concerned about the discord between the economic development and spiritual idealism.
