In the process of revising the Museum Act, there has been a debate that for-profit corporations and joint-stock companies should be allowed to establish registered museums. With this in mind, this paper examines how the public interest and publicness of corporate museums can be guaranteed. This paper reviews how the publicness of public cultural facilities, including museums, is discussed in cultural policy, how the “new public” and corporate social responsibility and social contribution activities have evolved, and what the publicness of corporate museums is. The concept of “new public,” which did not exist when the Museum Act was promulgated in 1951, could be the basis for the public interest and publicness of corporate museums. The key is that corporate museums should be positioned in corporate social responsibility activities and social contribution activities.
