Effects of coffee on mood and appetite and gastrointestinal transit were examined in 18 healthy subjects. In the experiments for mood and appetite, milk, milk plus coffee (4g), solid food, solid food plus coffee or coffee alone was used for a test meal. Mood was assessed using visual analogue scale. Oro-cecal transit time was measured with breath hydrogen method. Appetite was assessed from the amount of food eaten at lunch. Large bowel transit time was measured using radiopaque marker after 2 weeks of coffee-intake period or control period. Coffee did not affect hunger sensation after milk. Hunger sensation was significantly lower when coffee was taken before solid meal (p < 0.01). Coffee depressed sleepiness and increased the sensation of urge to defecate (p < 0.01). Coffee before solid meal depressed hunger, sleepy, tiredness and urge to defecate (p < 0.01). Coffee did not affect orocecal transit time, large bowel transit time and the amount of food eaten at lunch. In conclusion, coffee has a variety of effects on meal related mood, but has little effects on gastrointestinal transit and the amount of food eaten.
