Four types of traditional Oriental exercise therapy were presented in outline form : Yoga, Tai-chi, Zen and Qigong. Some thirty reports dealing with them were reviewed. Yoga, its physiology especially in relation to breathing, its clinical applications and availability, has been well studied. The physiological demands, circulatory functions, catecholamine and other hormonal secretion in connection with Tai-chi have been investigated . Zen has been studied among high-ranking monks using electroencephalogram. The difficulty in finding suitable subjects is a problem for research in any of the Oriental health therapy forms used traditionally. Except for its thermographic analysis, Qigong, a popular form of exercise in Japan, has not been scientifically researched. Its intensive investigation leading to a scientific consensus must be undertaken in the near future.
