Nutritional status was assessed in underweight students of Nagoya University. Physically, these students were tall and light. On medical examination, they were mostly healthy, but some of them suffered from functional gastro-intestinal diseases. Serum biochemical analyses were within normal limits except that low cholesterolemia was observed in 8.5% of them. Mentally, 15.1% of the students were judged having neurotic tendency or neurosis. Physical activity was low and only few of them performed exercises daily. Nutritionally, they ate more fat and took more energy than obese students. Since their body weights increased to normal in 70%, it is considered unnecessary to make a fine medical examination unless they are losing weight continuously or having symptoms relating to low body weight.
