A previous our study reported that image rehearsal with active inner-voice (IRA) related with kinesthetic imagery, while image rehearsal with passive inner-voice (IRP) related with visual imagery. This result implied a possibility that inner-voice could control imagery. However, there were no effects of image rehearsal with inner-voice on performing the skill. Basis of these results, moreover, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of IRA and IRP on both performing and imaging the rotary pursuit skill in an early stage of learning. The dependent variables employed in the present study were scores of the vividness of image test, the image test scores, and the performance scores on pursuit rotor task. Subjects were 45 male undergraduate students. They were assigned to one of the three groups, 15 students for each group: IRA group, IRP group, and control (CON) group. As the original learning practice, each group alternated 20 30-sec physical practice trials with 45-sec intertrial intervals. During the intertrial intervals, IRA group mentally rehearsed with active inner-voice on the task, IRP group mentally rehearsed with passive inner-voice on the task, and CON group mentally engaged in an irrelevant task. Subjects in IRA and IRP groups were required to answer the image test on the task within 15-sec during an intertrial interval. After one week from that time, all groups received 5 30-sec trials with 30-sec intertrial intervals in rotary pursuit tracking as a retention test. The vividness of image test was administered twice for all subjects as the last of the original learning practice and the beginning of the retention test phases. There were no differences of mean scores on performing and imaging among the three groups in the original learning practice and the retention test phases. Adjacent intertrial correlations of image test scores. however, showed relatively high and significant for IRA and IRP groups during the latter half of original learning practice (r = 0.609~0.935). Further, the image test became high with increase trial. These results suggested that it is necessary for mentally rehearsing to practice in order to make an imagery more vivid.
