The aims of this study were to examine the effects of attachment to parents on support seeking from significant others, as well as the social support actually received from these significant others, and also, to examine the balance between received support and support seeking. They also revealed a tendency receive more support from their mother than what they sought from her. Participants who were characteristic of the Preoccupied Type received and sought a lot of support from their mothers, receiving little from their fathers, while demanding a lot from them. They also showed a tendency to seek more support from their fathers and mothers than they received. Those who were a Dismissing Type received little support from their father and mother, while also seeking little. They typically sought less support from their fathers and mothers than what they received from them. Finally, the Apprehensive Type reported little support from their father and mother, while seeking little support from them. They showed no imbalance between support received nor sought from their father and mother. Incidentally, the Secure Type received more social support from their friends, and sought more from them than the Apprehensive Type. However, there were no differences between attachment styles on the imbalance of social support received and sought.
