This report is a basic study on the construction of the rating scales and is divided into the following five chapters. I. Problem. II. Collection and classification of the rating scales used for psychological studies in Japan. III. Collection and classification of the terms (most of them are adverbs) which express "degree". a. Terms which express degree of things (78 words). b. Terms which express degree of frequency (43 words). c. Terms which express degree of probability (45 words). d. Terms which express degree of time distance from a reference point (22 words). IV. Research of the terms concerning with the meaning of degree through the paired comparison method. The total subjects were 1942; 690 elementary school children (fifth grade), 578 junior high school pupils (second grade), 590 high school pupils (first, second and third grades) and 84 adults. V. Summary.
