This article describes results of a one-year longitudinal survey on the perceived occupational environment surrounting nursing activities in terms of the images on 4 keyconcepts (Nurse, Doctor, Patient and Hospital) measured by using a set of adjective scales. Subjects were 862 nurse students derived from 7 different courses to aquire a nursing license in Japan. The questionnaires were administered during April-June, 1988 and subjects were followed up one year later in 1989. Main findings are summarized as follows; First, a series of factor analyses on image scales of 4 key concepts demonstrated that the students tended to perceive their occupational environment in the same manner regarding the factor structure of each concept between the first and the second year study. Second, a comparison of the image-factor scores among different schooling systems indicated that the 2-year course students generally tended to have negative occupational images relative to others. Third, the occupational images worsened with the school-year progression. Fourth, a canonical discriminant analysis was attemted by using different nursing courses as a criterion measure and the image discrepancy scores computed between the first and the secondyear study as explanatory variables. This analysis identified two dimensions; The first dimension was strongly related to changes in factors involving self-centeredness and tough-mindedness of Patinet. The second dimension was related mainly to the change of unfamiliarity of Docter. Fifth, to understand the structure of perceived occupational environment for nursing activities, the occupational image factor scores were correlated each other, with the result that the positive images on the perceived occupational environment tended to remain independent of the negative ones. Finally, based on the above findings, problems associated with the nursing education system in Japan were discussed.
