Modularization
Brazilian automobile industry
2008-09-16
A trend towards the adoption of modularization can be observed in the Brazilian automobile industry from the mid-1990s onwards. As a result, automakers are focusing on coordination rather than integration in supply chain management, and although efforts are being made to enhance efficiently at the individual and organizational levels, the system level is being neglected. Fieldwork data shows that the lack of an integrative approach is the main problem in the relationship between the automaker and its first-tier suppliers. Nonetheless, for promoting a higher level of economic growth as well as to increase the degree of spillover of technologies and techniques within the automobile industry and to other industrial sectors, a more integrative approach is needed.
