This study examined the categories of context which influence self-development among Japanese young adults. The Japanese version of the Subject-Object Interview (“SOI”) was administered to 40 young adults (age: 25-35 years) in Japan. The categories of topics narrated by participants in the SOI were examined. Results indicated that more young adults narrated categories of “Vocation & Work” and “Family & Relative” in the interview relative to university students. Furthermore, it would appeared that Japanese young adults work on developmental tasks of young adulthood in the contexts related to important life events peculiar to their developmental stage based on examination of categories of “Vocation & Work” and “Family & Relative”.
