The recent Shakespearean studies, especially those of Hamlet, have been inclined to discuss the problems of memory in his plays, focusing upon the significance of the memory in early modern England. This article, on the contrary, makes an investigation on the theme of forgetfulness in Hamlet from the historical viewpoints, paying a special attention to the relationship between Queen Gertrude as a "Widdow" and her failure of memory. The conclusion is as follows: in spite of the fact that in the early modern England the widow was represented as the embodiment of forgetfulness, the figure of Gertrude holding the poisoned cup of wine in Act 5 Scene 2 can be interpreted not only as the mnemonic figure which reminds Hamlet of the order of Ghost, but also as a means to help remind us of Hamlet itself as an apparatus of the art of memory.
