BACKGROUND: A newspaper is one of most important resources of health information, especially for older adults. The purpose of this study is to clarify the frequencies that the events to promote older adults' health were announced in the newspapers. METHODS: We searched the articles announcing the upcoming events to promote the health in five major newspapers (Asahi, Chunichi, Mainichi, Nikkei and Yomiuri) published in Nagoya city in 2008. RESULTS: Six hundred and twenty-one articles were picked up. Chunichi placed 394 articles (63.4%), and Asahi (15.1%), Nikkei (11.1%) followed. CONCLUSIONS: The frequencies announcing the events varied much by the newspapers. As a newspaper is the primary assisting tool for older adults to catch the health information, it is expected to be responsible for the older adults' health literacy.
