The purpose of this study was to clarify the characteristics of athletes' crisis experiences and the serious crisis issues for athletes. University athletes (198 males and 184 females) completed a questionnaire assessing their experience of crisis and exploration for six issues in the athletic domain, and for seven issues in the daily life domain. The participants were categorized to three groups by competition level: higher, middle, and lower competition levels. An examination of the scores of crisis and exploration for each issue revealed that, for male athletes who play in higher competition levels, the serious crisis issues were the issues of team management and future occupation/life course; for male athletes who play in middle and lower competition levels, the serious crisis issues were the issues of future occupation/life course, life style/values, and friends of the opposite sex; for female athletes who play in higher competition levels, the serious crisis issues were the issues of coaches, athletic performance, future occupation/life course, and life style/values; for female athletes who play in middle and lower competition levels, the serious crisis issues were the issues of continuation in athletics, future occupation/life course, and life style/values. These results suggest that the serious crisis issues are different by competition level and sex.
