Some years ago,one of the authors made a report on the waveform of atmospherics in the daytime,in which he classified it in accordance with the mechanism of discharge in thunderstoms, and he insisted that the waveform in the daytime depends upon a parent discharge. In this paper the authors made preliminary remarks on the nature of the waveform at night, especially the dependence on the propagation condition and the parent discharge mechanism. Due to the favourable reflection condition on the ionosphere at night, the space wave component of atmospherics is fairly large and its waveform represents rather complex one in accordance with the phase and amplitude of the component echoes. Characteristics resulting from discharge mechanism keep their general features fairly well after long travelling, and therefore we can almost always discriminate the kind of parent discharge after the waveform. We found, really, characteristic waveform of heavy thunderstorms in Malaya and Indonesia,or that of thunderstorms, showers, fronts, etc. in the middle latitude. Some of the waveforms indicated echoes so clear that we could calculate the apparent height of ionosphere (90 km) and the distance of the source, latter being often coincident with the results of triangulation due to C.R.D.F. very well. In conclusion waveform of atmospherics at night does not depend so much upon its direction and distance,so long as the latter is more than 1,000 km,but it depends mainly upon the discharge mechanism in the atmosphere, characterized by the districts and the kind of discharges, though sometimes modified heavily by echoes.
