This paper deals with the scattering of electromagnetic waves obliquely incident on an inhomogeneous plasma column which has a parabolic radial density distribution and its application to ionospheric irregulariries. Explicit expressions of scattered wave fields and fields inside the irregularity are given. Formulas of scattering patterns are given analytically as functions of frequency, incident angle, and irregularity width. As special cases, scattering by a magnetic field-aligned irregularity at normal incidence, and scattering by irregularities with regular spatial distribution, are also discussed.
