This article is in two parts. The first part defines, from a sociolinguistic point of view, “academic writing” as a “sociolect” and describes the “critical thinking” which plays an important role in modern societies and universities. The second part proposes the necessity of an education of academic writing at the university level in order to develop the intellectual autonomy of students, having a “well made” head, which Michel de Montaigne preferred to a “well filled” head.
