Sensitivity analysis is a strong tool to solve engineering and science problems systematically. This paper describes the general theory of sensitivity analysis and its application to hydrocarbon chemistry. The Green function method is extensively studied and used to develop a sensitivity analysis program. In particular, the pyrolysis and oxidation of acetaldehyde as well as the oxidation of n-butane are studied in detail and the usefulness of sensitivity analysis is shown in comparison with a simplified mechanism and a full mechanism of acetaldehyde combustion. Some of elementary sensitivity coefficients and Green function coefficients are shown in conjunction with an analysis of hydrocarbon mechanism.
