It is known that the ancient Japanese verb “mono-su” can be used as a substantial verb and a subsidiary verb. From the Heian Period to the Muromachi Period, mono-su was frequently used as a substantial verb. During the Edo Period, the frequency of “mono-su” as a substantial verb increased so rapidly that only the substantial verb usage remained after the Meiji Period. The substantialization of “mono-su” and its tendency of having volitional meaning as a transitive verb leaded to the fewer cases of the subsidiary verb usage of “mono-su”. From the Heian Period to the Muromachi Period, “mono-su” was used to describe people’s existence, movement or object’s existence, it shows the maintaining of actions and situations. From the Edo Period, there was a sharp increse in the cases that “mono-su” was used to describe the visible changes due to some actions to a concrete object, and “mono-su” became used only in such cases. The literary style also influenced this change.
