This study investigated how best to regulate the approach to the takeoff board in the long jump. The subject was a female long jumper, who was a member of the university track-and-field club. She was required to jump three times under four experimental conditions, which consisted of 2 movement conditions after the approach (Jump or Run-Through) X 2 approach conditions (Takeoff Board (TB) On or Off). In the Run-Through condition, the subject had to approach the takeoff board, but not actually jump. ln the TB-On condition, the subject was instructed not to step over the takeoff board, and in the TB-Off condition, to take off at any position. The approach movements were recorded using two cameras, and analyzed using the Panning DLT procedure. These approaches were analyzed from three viewpoints: 1) invariant and variant features in the step length, 2) the kinematics of trunk rotation movements, and 3) their dynamics during the approach. The analysis revealed that in the Jump/TB-On condition, the final steps were more variant and the range of the hip rotation angle was very small during the approach, as compared with the other conditions. This suggests that the movement pattern during the approach in the long jump is completely different from that while sprinting. Furthermore, the analysis of the trajectories in the state space on hip rotation angle as a dynamical system suggested that the approach consisted of three different movement patterns in the Jump/TB-On condition. It suggested that the coordinative structure changes because of task-constraints during the approach in the long jump. These results suggest that during the approach in the long jump it is necessary to coordinate these structures and to switch between them smoothly.
