There are some stories that a serious man (mamebito) turuns into amorous in tales of Heian period. A man with a happy family suddenly has no regard for his wife and children. Yugiri is Hekaru Genji’s son, and everyone says he is a mamebito. He was finally able to marry Kumoinokari his first love, after enduring many obstacles. The couple had many children. But he secretly harbored a longing for an elegant love affair. In particular, she had a secret crush on his mother-in-law, Murasakinoue, and his cousin Tamakazura. Eventually, he became a disappointment, devoting himself to raising his children with no musical talent. After the death of his friend Kashiwagi, he became attracted to his widow, the elegant Onna-Ninomiya (Ochibanomiya). Finally he was forced to marry her. In the chpter of Yugiri, his family comedy is told. The conversation between Yugiri and Kumoinokari corresponds closely to the language. He is newly moved by seeing his wife’s adorable jealousy. She was angry with her husband for cheating on her and went home to her own family. But they never divorce. The scene in which Kumoinokari takes the letter from Miyasudokoro was depicted in a picture scroll that is a national treasure. This picture scroll is an accurate understanding of the subject matter of this volume. The comedy of the Yugiri family has serious repercussions for Hikaru Genji, Murasakinoue, Janachirusato, and others around them. He is only a serious man, even if he pretends to be the hero of a love story.
