In order to disclose the characteristics in cardio-vascular response to stress, one-hour rest in supine position and standing during 5 minutes were imposed on hypertensive students and postgraduates in three consecutive years, 1980, 1981 and 1982. Hypertension was diagnosed by three serial blood pressure measurements when systolic pressure was more than 140 mmHg or diastolic pressure more than 90 mmHg at 1st and 2nd measurements and the former more than 150 mmHg or the latter more than 90 mmHg at the 3rd measurement. Seven normal controls were chosen from students whose routine examination could not reveal any abnomalities. Blood pressure and heart rate took always high values as shown in tables 1 and 2 in hypertensives. One-hour rest made a reduction of blood pressure in both groups, but hypertensive group had somewhat elevated blood pressure. In contrast to the blood pressure response the reduction of heart rate was not observed after one-hour rest in hypertensive. While standing during a period of 5 minutes hypertensives demonstrated significantly greater values in systolic pressure, diastolic pressure and heart rate compared to the control group. Heart rate was 90s in hypertensive in 3 minutes after standing-up. These characteristics of hypertensives in cardiovascular response to postural change were not related to such factors as obesity, the heart rate at the moment of their arrival at our center and the frequency of diastolic pressure showing more than 90 mmHg.
