I mainly discuss his works “ 旧主人 Old Master,” “ 並木Row of Trees,” “ 突貫Onrush,” and 新生New Life. Through analyzing these novels and the discourses of “model problems,” I will explore the relationship between the rise of realistic fiction and novelistic depictions of people’s privacy. A “model problem” is an incident which was caused by a fiction that realistically depict characters modeled on real persons who are contemporary with the author. “Models” sometimes get angry at being described in a fiction against their will and protest against the author. In modern Japanese literary history, no other novelist has been more embroiled in “model problems” than Toson. To consider the string of troubles around Toson we should think about the following questions: how did the realistic novel born in the middle of Meiji period picture people’s private lives? What kind of trouble emerged then and how did people react against it? What were the features of Toson’s realistic novels? Finally, how were the novels carried by cultural infrastructures such as the formation of literary media and publishing?}, pages = {125--147}, title = {写実小説のジレンマ : 島崎藤村とモデル問題}, volume = {57}, year = {2011} }
