内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 In general, flat and elliptical stone weights, in which the ends of both the major and minor axes are chipped, are collectively referred to as “chipped stone weights”. There are two theories as to the use of chipped stone weights: one deems such weights to be fishing net sinkers; and, the other considers them to be loom weights used for weaving using a weaving board. This paper aims to elucidate how such chipped stone weights were actually used in the Jomon Period in the district of present-day Ishikawa Prefecture. First, the paper will establish the weight of fishing net sinkers by reviewing: ( i ) data of net fishing-related folklore remaining of Ishikawa Prefecture; (ii) literary documents published in the early-modern era; and (iii) the archaeological remains ranging from the Jomon Period to the Middle Age. Next, the paper will establish the weight of loom weights used in the Jomon Period, based on the folklore data handed down to current times. Finally, the paper will establish the weights of the chipped stone weights used in the Jomon Period. Through the comparisons and analysis described above, this paper aims to: ( i ) compare the weights of fishing net sinkers from the Jomon Period to the present day with the weights of chipped stone weights of the Jomon Period; (ii) compare the weights of loom weights established through folklore data with that of the chipped stone weights of the Jomon Period; and, thereby, (iii) conclude whether the chipped stone weights of the Jomon Period were used as fishing net sinkers or as loom weights. According to the results of the research of the chipped stone weights unearthed from the 11 Jomon sites within Ishikawa Prefecture, it is understood that the weight of such weights ranges from 8 to 1, 654 grams. Among these weights, those of 8 – 110 grams are likely to be fishing net sinkers. Furthermore, the weights ranging 20 – 880 grams may be loom weights, and those exceeding 880 grams may have been used for a different type of application from the fishing net sinkers or loom weights.
