Some predictions said that Labor might gain some seats and reduce coalition’s majority, and that would lead to the real possibility for regime change in the next election, even though Labor could not win the government at this time. However, the result was that coalition increased five seats and Labor reduced four seats. And this made very difficult for Labor to win the next election. Even though it seems that this loss of several seats seems not so difficult for Labor to overcome, however, detailed analysis on the election result reveals the severe consequences of this result. First of all, even though Labor could retain 60 seats, margin of these existing seats declined sharply and even makes some seats vulnerable to retain at the next election. On the other hand, coalition not only gained several seats but also it could increase margin of existing seats and made them much safer. Secondly, state by state analysis reveals that one of the main reasons of Labor’s loss is in its poor performance in NSW, which is“home state”of then leader Latham. Usually, home state of the leader of political party is said to produce favorable result, however, Labor only could gain one seat in Sydney’s suburban area and actually lost another one seat. In 2001 election, then Labor leader Kim Beazley was from Western Australia and it is said this has contributed to relatively better result in WA. But in 2004 election, the fact that Labor leader is not from WA resulted to loss of two seats for Labor and sharp decrease of margin in existing seat in WA. Thirdly, Labor’s native forest policy in Tasmania, which is to protect large areas of native forest and consequently angered forest workers’ union for fear of job losses, has resulted not only loss of two seats in Tasmania, but also loss of one seat in Victoria where there is heavy forest industry. Fourthly, State Labor governments’ political issue, such as Scoresby free way issue in Victoria dramatically affected negatively to the federal election and prevented federal Labor to gain any seats in Victoria.
