But we should take it not only as an episode that symbolized the decline of sterling but also as the clue to understand the tangled context in the sterling's twilight time, when the emergence of euro-dollar market in London and the rebirth of City happened. Actually the incidents before and after the devaluation showed that sterling still had more important function than other European currencies. And UK's balance of payments improved beyond the government's expectation by the devaluation.
