The purpose of this article was to synthesize the findings through the literature review. First, the definition of interpersonal rejection was examined from the view of relational value. Second, several theoretical frameworks capturing the interpersonal rejection, need to belong theory, sociometer theory, a model of social ostracism, social monitoring system, social pain theory, and threatened egotism model, were introduced. Third, a variety of experimental manipulations of interpersonal rejection was compared in terms of five dimensions, prior belonging status, evaluative valence, behavioral disassociation, comparative versus noncomparative judgment, and rejection period. Fourth, the behavioral, cognitive, and affective consequences of interpersonal rejection were examined, and an integrative model was proposed.
