However, very few studies have examined the relationship between neighborhood context and the development of self-regulation. Social self-regulation is acquired through an individual's development process, and consists of self-assertiveness and self-inhibition (Harada, Yoshizawa & Yoshida, 2008). Social self-regulation, thus, could be considered an important index to assess the level of individuals' socialization. The purpose of this study was to reveal the effect of neighborhood collective efficacy and violence on social self-regulation. Some 488 undergraduates participated in a questionnaire survey. The participants were asked to rate the level of perceived collective efficacy within their community during their elementary and junior high school attendance. The violence exposure was assessed by the frequency of experienced violence in the community during junior high and high school attendance. Social self-regulation was assessed by a 29-item scale (Harada et al., 2008), measuring the three facets of social self regulation (i.e., self-assertiveness, patience, and emotion/desire suppression). The results of structural equation modeling showed that collective efficacy promotes all three facets of social self-regulation. Further, collective efficacy decreased the likelihood of exposure to violence in the community, which affected one of the facets of social self-regulation, self-assertiveness. The direct effect of collective efficacy on social self-regulation of participants having lived in the same community for more than 18 years was stronger than that for others.
