It is hypothesized that Amelican college students would reveal higher assumed competence than Japanese students, as they have more independent construal of the self rather than an interdependent one. The data collection took place in the spring of 2010, in which 168 undergraduate students of the State University of New York at Buffalo participated. Their race/ethnicities included Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic, and Asian. The present study finds that American students showed not only higher assumed competence but also higher self-esteem than Japanese students. In addition, they tended to have high independent construal of the self as expected. However, there is no positive correlation between independent construal of the self and assumed competence, although such a relation was demonstrated among the Japanese students. Analyzing from competence style, this study finds that the majority of American students belonged to omnipotence type (only one student was classified into atrophy type). Furthermore, it also shows that the students with high-assumed competence communicated less with their family than the students with low-assumed competence.}, pages = {47--59}, title = {アメリカ合衆国大学生の仮想的有能感}, volume = {57}, year = {2010} }
