Candombe is rooted in a religious ceremony of Afro-Uruguayans in Montevideo in the 18th century. At the end of the 19th century, Candombe was introduced as the carnival music of Montevideo. Since 1940s, the Candombe rhythm was used in various popular music genres as an important element of Uruguayan national identity. Though the candombe originated from Afro-Uruguayan culture, today many white Uruguayans participate in the carnival performing the candombe.
