University students were asked to answer the questionnaire, consisted with mainly open-ended questions. 123 data were analyzed. As the result of the survey, it was found that although Japanese university students were pleased with being a Japanese citizen, they have negative feeling about being a Japanese about the outlook and the mentality as well. Japanese mentality was described with reference to Japanese culture. And the helical structure of Japanese language and Japanese mentality (feelings, thinkings, logics, sence of value, etc.) was discussed. Because Japanese-speaking-people have acquired their Japanese mentality in the process of learning in their growing process and using Japanese language in everyday life, it is not easy to change their mentality in a short time even though they want to do so. In the atmosphere where the westerner communication style and logics are supposed to be the best, most of Japanese tend to make up their negative group-selfconcept as a natural consequence.
