The concept of Figurenposition can be defined as follows: “the actor’s position on the stage, and the speech, action, and degree of stylization associated with that position” (Weimann 224). Taking the concept of Figurenposition into consideration, it is entirely fair to say that Viola, who assumes the role of “an eunuch” (TN 1.2.53) to Orsino, can be free from the fear of symbolic castration caused by gazing and eavesdropping: Viola’s Figurenposition, which assigns her to both the locus which can “assume an illusionary character” and the platea where the communal festivities are held on the “nonrepresentational and unlocalized setting” (Weimann 79), enables her to laugh with the audience, and to get rid of the fear of symbolic castration.}, pages = {13--24}, title = {Twelfth NightにおけるViolaのフィギュレンポジツィオン}, volume = {58}, year = {2012} }
