Drawing on conversation analysis (CA), a micro-analytic approach to talk-in-interaction, I aim to explore how “demo” functions when it is used in a specific action during a specific activity; namely, in a response to the telling of one’s trouble. Specifically, I focus on the cases in which “demo” is placed before understanding or empathy towards the teller of the trouble is expressed. Whi4le “demo (but)” is syntactically categorized as a contrastive connective, its function to connect two sentential elementsis not fully kept when it is used before the indication of an alignment with a previous speaker, such as understanding or empathy. The analysis revealed that “demo,” when usedduring the telling of a trouble, manages the progressivity of conversation as well as the sensitivity of the talk that telling of a trouble causes.
