A set of interviews was conducted on 14 students in the seventh grade. The subjects were asked to formulate algebraic expressions and to explain the difficulties in formulating algebraic expressions. The results indicated that there were six categories in their recognitions; the nature of algebraic answers, notations in algebra, the means of letters, generalization, monitoring, and the incompetence.
