Literature published between 1983 and 2000 was reviewed following a systematic search of PsycINfO, EBSCO, and the National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect. This study focused on two aspects that the one is included the duration and type of treatment, type of maltreatment, subject number, pre-post test, length of follow-up, if so, comparison group, the other is included play therapy of background theories with goal and process of therapy. During the last two decades there has been substantial progress in developing the play therapy approach models associated with child abuse. However, play therapy research studies are relatively rare and frequently have important methodological limitations. While most studies showed some improvement with play therapy, many had no, or very short, follow-up to see if improvement was sustained.
