It is usually known that the sunlight attacks rubber material, and causes it to entirely lose its elasticity and become sticky. In order to obtain the knowledge of the long-term performance of the ultraviolet exposed rubber products, the effect of ultraviolet irradiation on surface rubber of bridge bearing has been examined through accelerated aging tests. Four kinds rubber materials normally used in bridge rubber bearings were subjected to ultraviolet irradiation for a period up to 2 months. The changes in mechanical properties were investigated at different pre-strains. Besides, the influences of the amount of carbon black on the ultraviolet stability of natural rubber (NR) were evaluated.
