Specifically, I focus on pointing directed toward one of the participants. The present data demonstrates that pointing towards a previous or ongoing speaker has a backward-looking function; incipient storytellers can indicate not only that they have something to tell in relation to the prior speech, but also what exactly in he prior talk triggered the upcoming story, thereby showing "why that now" s/he has to initiate the story at the specific moment in talk. Also, the data reveals the use of a forward-looking pointing gesture, which can project a feature of an upcoming story as well as indicate an appropriate participation framework to different kinds of recipients simultaneously. This study thus aims to explore interactional functions of pointing by investigating how its basic referential function and its feature as bodily conduct allow a participant to deal with various interactional problems in securing the floor for storytelling during conversation.}, pages = {85--99}, title = {語りの開始にともなう他者への指さし : 多人数会話における指さしのマルチモーダル分析}, volume = {60}, year = {2014} }
