Since Kuno (1973), it has been widely acknowledged that the choice of Japanese demonstratives (the distal a-series, the medial so-series, and the proximal ko-series) in their endophoric use is regulated by the rules that make reference to the speaker’s and the hearer’s knowledge of the referent. This paper reconsiders Kuno’s influential analysis, points out some empirical problems with it, and proposes some modifications to deal with them. The a-series can be used only when it is assumed that both speaker and hearer recognize the referent, where the relation of “recognize” can be established by any kind of direct contact, however slight or brief it is. The so-series can be used only when it is assumed that one or both of the interlocutors does not recognize the referent. The ko-series can be used only when it is assumed that the speaker recognizes the referent but the hearer does not, and has the effect of imparting “vividness” to the depiction of the referent.
